Life Purpose: often, we navigate through life feeling a strange sense of being scattered, as if our most vital energy were draining away without clear direction. It’s as if, without reconnecting with our Life Purpose, the energy that drives us disperses, transforming from a strong and assertive jet into small, sparse jets, like those from a showerhead, losing strength and impact. But what if there was a way to channel this energy, transforming it into a powerful and determined flow?
Have you ever wondered what truly drives a fulfilling life? Many of us go through the motions of daily existence without pausing to reflect on our deeper purpose. Understanding your life purpose is more than just a philosophical pursuit; it is a practical guide on how to lead a life full of meaning and purpose, how to identify your life purpose, and how this discovery can lead to a more fulfilling life.
My Journey and Understanding of Life Purpose
Having worked with groups of people to overcome emotional barriers and reconnect with what truly mattered to them, reconnecting with Life Purpose has been a topic of my interest since the 1980s.”
In 1980, after completing my training, I began working with groups of people and quickly noticed patterns: some had difficulty feeling joy intensely, others had difficulty feeling affection deeply, and many had difficulty expressing their creativity. These are not minor challenges — they are emotional roadblocks that can hinder us from achieving personal goals, achieving self-discovery, personal growth, and, ultimately, a meaningful life.
This experience is why I believe that addressing the emotional aspect is essential for reconnecting with your life purpose.
Understanding Life Purpose
Defining Purpose
Purpose can be seen as the underlying reason for why we do what we do. It’s not just about setting goals, but about understanding the driving force behind those goals. However, not all purposes are created equal. When Purpose is aligned with our Life Purpose, it gives our actions true meaning and direction, helping us prioritize our lives around what truly matters. These are the authentic purposes, those that serve as stepping stones toward the realization of our Life Purpose.
On the other hand, disconnected purposes are those that exist in isolation, lacking a deeper connection to our Life Purpose. They may provide short-term satisfaction or achievements, but ultimately fail to contribute to a sense of lasting fulfillment. To achieve our life purpose, it’s vital to learn to express emotions healthily.
To better understand this distinction, imagine a carousel in an amusement park. The carousel has a central axis (the Life Purpose) around which wooden horses (our individual Purposes) revolve. The central axis provides stability and direction; without it, the carousel cannot function as intended. Similarly, our authentic purposes are most effective and fulfilling when aligned with our Life Purpose.
For example, someone might pursue a college degree simply to have a diploma, yet never use the acquired knowledge in their professional life. While the degree fulfills a short-term goal (Purpose), it may lack a connection to the individual’s deeper Life Purpose, leaving their actions without lasting meaning or direction.
Importance of Life Purpose
Why is having a life purpose so essential? It acts as a compass, guiding us through the complexities of life. Life purpose provides clarity and motivation, helping to foster resilience during challenging times.
Without life purpose, we may find ourselves adrift, seeking satisfaction in temporary achievements rather than lasting fulfillment. Furthermore, studies have shown that individuals with a strong sense of purpose tend to experience better mental health and well-being (1).

The Early Gift of Life Purpose
Some people discover their life purpose quite early in life. We’ve all seen talented singers or performers like Anastasia Petrik who, at the age of four, left audiences awestruck with her rendition of “Oh, Darling.”
These individuals seem to carry a metaphorical label on their foreheads that reads: “This is my Life Purpose.” They shine in specific areas from a young age, possessing a clarity about their path that is both rare and enviable.
The Journey of Discovery
For the majority of us, however, uncovering our life purpose is more like a journey. It’s a process of exploration and self-discovery, often requiring us to delve deep within ourselves.
Our life purpose may lie dormant, waiting patiently, nudging us toward its revelation. Without an obvious “label,” we are compelled to embark on experiences that illuminate our inner world, helping us identify what truly excites and fulfills us.
A Metaphorical Tale of Hidden Treasure
An ancient story offers insight into why our life purpose often feels elusive. It is said that the devil sought to hide the treasure bestowed upon humans by God. To do this, he consulted his advisors.
The first advisor suggested, “Hide it within the earth!” But the devil dismissed this idea, reasoning, “Humans are inherently curious. They will dig and eventually find it.”
He then sought counsel from a second advisor, who recommended hiding it atop a mountain. The devil reasoned, “Humans are industrious; when they realize it’s not buried in the earth, they will search the mountaintops.”
Finally, a third advisor proposed hiding it in the depths of the sea. Yet again, the devil declined, saying, “Humans are clever. Once they find nothing in the earth or atop the mountains, they will search the ocean depths.”
Ultimately, the devil concluded, “I will hide it where humans will never think to look.” And so he hid it deep within the human heart.

Our greatest treasure is our Life Purpose. It is what imbues our lives with meaning and fullness, guiding us to leave a lasting legacy for future generations. It is the compass that chooses other goals and gives them significance.

For instance, in one such experience, my inner dialogue completely stopped, and my mind and emotions were fully immersed in the present moment — a simple yet profoundly powerful experience.
Mindfulness could truly be called Mind-and-Emotional-fullness. One of its greatest benefits is disrupting the compulsive flow of thoughts and emotions that distract us from our immediate purposes. When these distractions persist, they can gradually pull us away from our deeper life purpose. By breaking this cycle, mindfulness helps us stay aligned with what truly matters.

I invite you to try a simple exercise. First, listen to My Way, performed by Frank Sinatra. Rather than analyzing it or treating it as a task, simply feel the music.
Let it evoke emotions rather than thoughts. After listening to the song, with its emotional resonance fresh in your mind, observe how the echo of the melody dissolves, giving way to a sense of anticipation and introspection, proceed to the next step.
Reconnecting with the Feeling of Life’s Finitude
Remember a party where you spent time with friends, talked, and danced until it ended. Capture the details of that memory: the echoing laughter, the lively conversations, the colors of the lighting, the faces of loved ones, and even the familiar and comforting aroma of the environment. You felt satisfied with the experiences and the good moments shared with people you care about. Allow yourself to deeply feel this satisfaction, noting where in your body it manifests – a gentle warmth in your chest, a lightness in your mind. What is the taste of this fullness – perhaps sweetness, freshness, or the vital energy that fills you?
Visualize what you’ve already lived and what you still hope to experience. Let memories emerge with vivid clarity: the faces of people you loved, the places that marked you, the vibrant colors of joyful moments, and the nuances of challenges overcome. See the special light that bathes these recollections of fullness. Focus on one key question: “What is something I absolutely must experience before the party of my life comes to an end?”
Next, imagine yourself achieving that goal before the final chapter. It could be writing the book you’ve dreamed of, starting the business you’ve envisioned, or living the love you’ve yearned for. Feel the texture of this achievement, hear the sounds of its realization – perhaps silent applause, joyful laughter, or a melody of inner peace. What is the smell of success, of wet earth after rain, or of fresh air on a conquered mountain? Feel the satisfaction, like the one you felt after the party ended. Delve into this feeling, noticing the gratitude for choices, the pride in overcoming challenges (including difficult ones), and the lightness of accepting everything that brought you here. Did you notice where in your body this emotion of “mission accomplished” manifests itself?
And, like in the lyrics of My Way, feel content with what you’ve lived — despite the frustrations, regrets, and failures along the way. Then, let yourself say from the heart: “Now, I can leave satisfied.” Realize that this satisfaction is not a passive resignation, but a vibrant fullness, a deep peace that emanates from a fulfilled purpose and a life worth living.
Before moving on, anchor this powerful feeling of fullness and clarity. You can make a physical gesture, such as lightly pressing your thumb and index finger, or touching your heart. Alternatively, simply breathe deeply and intentionally three times, while internalizing every detail and insight that emerged. Feel that this ‘feeling’ and ‘insight’ are now a seed planted in your present, an internal compass that will guide you in future actions.
With this visualization and the emotions it stirs, you may have taken the first step on your journey to discover and embrace your life purpose. Studies suggest that such reflections, accompanied by practices like visualization, help deepen personal meaning.(7) Go forward!
